Free kicks on the edge of the area
The purpose of a wall is not to block the ball but to make play predictable. The goalkeeper should set up the way to cover the near post and to take into consideration any swerve by placing the wall one step extra covering the post. Whilst the wall is being set up the goalkeeper and indeed the whole team should be aware of any quick kicks, and a way to combat this is to have a player stand 1 yd/ 2 yds from the ball. The use of disguise is a way that players get away with this without being cautioned for unsporting behavior. Running in front of the ball to get into position, asking the ref a question in front of the ball, laces being tied etc. When the world Cup is on, watch how many teams use these tactics to delay a quick free kick. The goalkeepers communication will be loud, clear and short. An example is . "Two steps left - Hold" There should be one player in the wall that the goalkeeper directs and moves the wall. The tallest player should be on the outside of the wall and a player on the outside should be ready to charge the ball if it is played short.
The team should know who goes in the wall already. (preferably forwards and midfielders) as the keeper will shout a number.
The main thing for the goalkeeper is to be able to see the ball and better still the run up of the free kick taker. These goalkeepers I trust are good enough to save a shot that is taken outside the penalty box. The only thing that will stop them doing so is if the goalkeeper sees the ball late or it gets a deflection.
